About Us
"The essence of mathematics is not
to make simple things
complicated, but to make complicated things simple."
— S. Gudder
By empowering teachers with knowledge, insight and strategies, Seeing Math™ helps teachers
guide their students to math success. Our innovative professional
development programs integrate face-to-face and online interaction
with web-based learning, video case studies, and dynamic interactive
software. Seeing Math™ courses were developed by a team of experts in mathematics
education and educational technology to address "hard to teach" concepts and to give
teachers, schools, and districts content and instructional practices
aligned with National Council of Teachers of Mathematics (NCTM) standards and
many state standards.
Seeing Math™ guides each participant through a unique and deep learning experience.
Participants gain content mastery, but Seeing Math™ also stimulates
observation, analysis and reflection that helps educators effectively
apply this knowledge in the classroom. Seeing Math™ facilitators
interact with participants as a "guide on the side" rather
than a "sage on the stage," channeling discussion to key
learning points and ensuring a thoughtful, probing dialogue.
The Concord Consortium, a non-profit educational research and development
organization, created Seeing Math™ with funding from the U.S. Department
of Education. Through the Seeing Math™ Telecommunications
and the Ready To Teach projects, Concord Consortium
spent five years researching, designing, and testing the content,
software, teaching practices, resources, and instructional theory
behind the Seeing Math™ courses.
Seeing Math™ programs include:
- Seeing Math™ Elementary, eleven courses that incorporate video case studies,
interactive software and face-to-face and online moderated discussion
to give elementary school teachers effective teaching strategies
in Geometry, Number & Operations, Data Analysis & Probability,
and Pre-algebra. Seeing Math™ Elementary is distributed by Teachscape.
- Seeing Math™ Secondary, eleven facilitated courses that blend video, interactive
tools and online facilitated discussion to help secondary school
teachers make challenging algebra topics accessible to students.
Seeing Math™ Secondary is distributed by PBS TeacherLine.
